How to Draw Vase Step by Step Guide

If you’re new to drawing, don’t worry! With a little practice, anyone can create beautiful artworks. In this step-by-step guide, we will show you how to draw a vase, a classic still life subject. Follow our easy-to-understand instructions and before you know it, you’ll have a wonderful drawing to be proud of!

Materials

  • A pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper
  • Ruler

Step 1: Sketch the Basic Shapes

Begin by drawing the outline of the vase. The easiest way to do this is to draw two parallel lines that are slightly curved, like the letter “C”.

Step 2: Draw the Neck of the Vase

Now add the neck of the vase by drawing a long, thin rectangle on top of the curved lines. The rectangle should be slightly wider at the bottom.

Step 3: Add the Base of the Vase

Complete the bottom of the vase by drawing a flat oval or circle at the bottom of the curved lines.

Step 4: Add Details

Add some details to your vase, such as a lip or a decorative pattern. Draw a thin, curving line around the rim of the vase or add some leaves or flowers to decorate the vase.

Step 5: Erase Unnecessary Lines

Erase any unnecessary lines so that the final drawing looks clean and crisp.

Step 6: Add Shading

To give your vase more depth and dimension, add shading. Choose a light source and shade accordingly. Add darker shading to the areas that would be in shadow and lighter shading to the areas that would be hit by the light. You can add a reflected light to the bottom of the vase for extra realism.

Tips & Techniques

Use a Grid or a Reference Image

If you’re struggling with the proportions of your vase, use a grid or a reference image. Draw a grid over your reference photo and then transfer it to your drawing paper. This will help you get the basic shape accurate.

Draw with Light Lines

When you’re sketching, use light lines. This will make it easier to erase any mistakes or correct lines later on.

Practice Makes Perfect

The more you practice, the better you’ll get! Keep trying and don’t give up.

Summary

Congratulations! You’ve successfully drawn your very own vase. Remember to keep practicing to improve your skills. By following these easy-to-understand steps, you can continue to create beautiful drawings that you can be proud of.
